Joanna Smith “Georgia Mud”

Review by Matthew Fortuna

Joanna Smith is pure country sweetness. A singer-songwriting with a warm smile and a voice like honey, it seems like she’s just jumped on the scene with 2010’s debut single “Getting Married.” Smith, however, is already introducing her second single to radios, and “Georgia Mud” is sure to be a summertime sleeper that’s a favorite across Georgia and the rest of the country-loving world.

Smith is a 20-something songwriter from Crestview, Georgia, and draws inspiration from legends like Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. And listening closely, fans can hear traces of both influences in her voice, as she blends the sweetness and lightness of Parton with the country twang and attitude of a Reba

at her best.

“Georgia Mud,” not to be confused with Josh Kelley’s 2010 “Georgia Clay,” is an upbeat song in the same vein. It is an homage to the life in the Georgia mud, and feels like a “lazy old river floating by.” A light summer love song, “Georgia Mud” feature the effortless vocals from the singer, and the playful lyrics that can only be produced by a singer so connected to her own lyrics.

With the same kind of obvious talent as the women from Little Big Town, Joanna Smith has been part of an all-female band and even earned a full scholarship to Auburn University. Abandoning formal education for a honky tonk education, Smith released her debut album last year and is signed to Sony Music Nashville.

Smith looks to expand her brand through 2011, and with a voice filled with exuberance and youthful energy, and a smile fit for a billboard, she should have no problem gaining attention. It also doesn’t hurt that she has proven that she can craft a song out of nearly nothing, and infuse it with energy and personality.

Joanna Smith “Georgia Mud” Lyrics

Bare feet hangin’ off a tire swing
Cotton dress barely hanging onto me
Setting sun cooling down the august heat
Sweet magnolia in the ai
Lazy old river just floatin’ by
That boy was giving me the eye
River bank wasn’t quite dry
Standin’ at the water’s edge he said look ‘em over here

I felt it moving underneath my toes
Soakin’ in all over my clothes
We were laughing when he pulled me close
And my heart went thump, thump, thump
He had a little bit on his lips
When he gave me that first kiss
But it was perfect just the way it was
Back then, me and him, big grins covered in that Georgia mud

Think it took a good two days
To wash all that dirt away
Another two years to forget his face
He looked faded like a movie but every now and then I’d still

Feel it moving underneath my toes
Soakin’ in all over my clothes
We were laughing when he pulled me close
And my heart went thump, thump, thump
He had a little bit on his lips when he gave me that first kiss
It was perfect just the way it was
Back then, me and him, big grins covered in that Georgia mud

I felt it moving underneath my toes
Soakin’ in all over my clothes
Well it was hard to take it slow
When my heart went thump, thump, thump
He had a little bit on his lips
I gotta say I didn’t mind a bit
It was perfect just the way it was

Back then me and him big grins
Back then, me and him, big grins covered in that Georgia mud
