Throughout his career Kenny Chesney has developed a catalog of songs that celebrate life’s special moments. At times, he has released ballads such as ‘There Goes My Life’ which tenderly pull on the heartstrings or tunes like ‘No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems’ which pay tribute to not sweating the small things and taking it easy. With ‘Live a Little’ he is combining the recurring themes into one song.
Following behind ‘The Boys of Fall’ and ‘Somewhere With You’, ‘Live a Little’, which was penned by David Lee Murphy and Shane Minor, is the third single from Chesney’s current album ‘Hemingway’s Whiskey’. The lyrical content is instantly relatable to a listener as a myriad of mishaps are listed such as spilled morning coffee and running late.

Chesney proclaims he is tired of the monotony of the 9-5 and getting lost in the routine. He decides it is time to reorganize his priorities and live a little. He hopes to find the special lady who has been missing from his life and not only live but love. With her at his side, he wants to have a little fun and dance the night away and start laughing again.
The introduction to ‘Live a Little’ is a rather lengthy one, which lasts nearly a full minute and is led by a rhythmic pattern of drums and electric guitar that sets the tone, aiming to make the inspirational message more lighthearted than overly sentimental. The arrangement for the mid-tempo then levels out into a more palatable groove and Chesney joins in with a casual vocal.
The new single does not aim to be an evolutionary track that breaks away from preconceived notions and has gained many comparisons to ‘Keg In the Closet.’ And while it may struggle to be an instant hit like the previous singles released from Hemingway’s Whiskey, ‘Live a Little’ will surely be embraced by Kenny Chesney’s well-developed, massive fan base who love his signature style.
