Review by Amy Blizzard
Country superstar Kenny Chesney is well-known for his: casual Southern charm, catchy singles, top-selling albums and active live concerts. To avid fans, he is also known for his genuine love of football that inspired him to create the documentary ‘The Boys of Fall’ about the sport at a high school level. A former player during his own high school days in Luttrell, Tennessee, he is releasing a new leadoff single from his upcoming album Hemingway’s Whiskey (which is scheduled to drop on September 28th) that coincides perfectly with the quickly approaching new school year and football season.
Penned by Casey Beathard and Dave Turnbull, ‘The Boys of Fall’ is an anthem for high school football
players both past and present. The lyrics show a deeper appreciation for the sport beyond the stereotypical hard hits, adrenaline rushes and cheerleaders on the sidelines. It focuses on the brotherhood that is formed between the players on the team and life lessons the young men learn on the field that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
‘The Boys of Fall’ acts as a musical yearbook or scrapbook, bringing to life the picture of weekend nights when small town residents gather at the field to watch their ‘boys’ because football is ingrained into the local culture. The song’s lyrical content helps to draw a line between those who simply look at the sport as a game and the others who look at football as a way of life.
Chesney’s new single will undoubtedly strike a chord with former football players, and perhaps athletes in general. However, the insight provided into the sport and the simplistic art of storytelling could possibly even garner the attention of those who have never stepped onto the field, watched the game or experienced the nearly indescribable feeling of hearing a crowd chant their name.
Gentle and organic, ‘The Boys of Fall’ does not rely on musical fireworks to make an impact. Though the melody can occasionally border on being lackluster, the song still harbors an innate charm and allows Kenny Chesney to present a more emotive vocal than his other recent singles have permitted.

Kenny Chesney “The Boys Of Fall” Lyrics
When I feel that chill, smell that fresh cut grass
I’m back in my helmet, cleats and shoulder pads
Standing in the huddle listening to the call
Fans going crazy for the boys of fall
They didn’t let just anybody in that club
Took every ounce of heart and sweat and blood
To get to wear those game day jerseys down the hall
Kings of the school man, we’re the boys of fall
Well it’s turn and face the Stars and Stripes
It’s fighting back them butterflies
It’s call it in the air, alright yes sir we want the ball
And it’s knocking heads and talking trash
It’s slinging mud and dirt and grass
It’s I got your number, I got your back when your back’s against the wall
You mess with one man you got us all
The boys of fall
In little towns like mine that’s all they got
Newspaper clippings fill the coffee shops
The old men will always think they know it all
Young girls will dream about the boys of fall
Well it’s turn and face the Stars and Stripes
It’s fighting back them butterflies
It’s call it in the air, alright yes sir we want the ball
And it’s knocking heads and talking trash
It’s slinging mud and dirt and grass
It’s I got your number, I got your back when your back’s against the wall
You mess with one man you got us all
The boys of fall
Well it’s turn and face the Stars and Stripes
It’s fighting back them butterflies
It’s call it in the air, alright yes sir we want the ball
And it’s knocking heads and talking trash
It’s slinging mud and dirt and grass
It’s I got your number, I got your back when your back’s against the wall
You mess with one man you got us all
The boys of fall
We’re the boys of fall
We’re the boys of fall
