Review by Amy Blizzard
Ever since she left the Nashville Star stage and signed a record deal, country artist Miranda Lambert has craved a popular niche for herself and attracted a large fan base who adored her penchant for putting ex-boyfriends in their place and showing attitude. Last year, however, Lambert was propelled to a new level notoriety and became a multi-award winning superstar.
Her already impressive fan base rapidly widened, after the release of the now platinum album ‘Revolution’, to include more radio listeners, critics and her revered musical peers. Lambert showcased a deeper maturity, versatility and vulnerability through touching and endearing ballads such as ‘Dead Flowers’ and ‘The House That Built Me‘, but she did not veer away completely from her signature sassy style.
‘Heart Like Mine’, Lambert’s fifth single from her most recent album, follows in the footsteps of ‘Only Prettier’ and ‘White Liar’ and allows her to once again place a spotlight on her vibrant personality. The lyrical content finds the young singer clearly defining her rebellious ways and admitting she is not the kind of a girl a gentleman would want to take home to meet his mother.
She is a tough and rowdy chick with a heart who smokes, drinks and gets tattoos. And when approached by ‘Christian folks’ who suggest she should change her carefree and reckless behavior, she merely offers a blessing in return and states that she believes Jesus would understand a heart like hers since he drank wine.
The guitar led arrangement for the mid-tempo kicks off with a casual and surprisingly understated start that creates a uniquely simple contrast to the lyrics and builds after reaching the catchy chorus. Miranda Lambert is truly in her element and presents a charming and entertaining vocal that immediately captures a listener’s attention.
Much like ‘Pray for You‘ by Jaron and the Long Road to Love, ‘Heart Like Mine’ may be met with mixed reactions due to the religious references. While some may consider the tune to be easy-going or even relatable, it may not sit well with those who are staunchly conservative. Regardless of its interpretation, the new single once again proves that Miranda Lambert is a genuine artist and not afraid to take chances with her art.

Miranda Lambert “Heart Like Mine” Lyrics
I ain’t the kind you take home to mama
I ain’t the kind to wear no ring
Somehow I always get stronger
When I’m on my second drink
Even though I hate to admit it
Sometimes I smoke cigarettes
The Christian folks say I should quit it
And I just smile and say “god bless”
Cause I heard Jesus he drank wine
And I bet we’d get along just fine
He could calm a storm and heal the blind
And I bet he’d understand a heart like mine
Daddy cried when he saw my tattoo
But said he loved me anyway
My brother got the brains of the family
So I thought I’d learn to sing
Cause I heard Jesus he drank wine
And I bet we’d get along just fine
He could calm a storm and heal the blind
And I bet he’d understand a heart like mine
And I’ll fly away from it all one day
And I’ll fly, I’ll fly away
But these are the days that I will remember
When my names called on a roll
He’ll meet me with two long stem glasses
And make a toast to me coming home
Cause I heard Jesus he drank wine
And I bet we’d get along just fine
He could calm a storm and heal the blind
And I bet he’d understand
Understand a heart like mine
Oh yes he would
