There are many, many country songs about work. A common element in these songs is the hatred of the bossman. You know, that guy who lets you dream just to watch ‘em shatter. Yesterday I read an interview with country music superstar, Garth Brooks . In it, he describes his decision to keep his music off of iTunes. His reasoning reflects a paranoia about technology and a big-business attitude towards content creation: Until we get variable pricing, until we get album-only (downloads), then they are not a true retailer for my stuff, and you won’t see my stuff on there. Our government’s not doing anything about piracy.

There is an old lyric from a classic blues track that says, “the blues had a baby…and they called it rock n’ roll.” Believe me, there is much truth in that statement You can listen to all the first rock n’ roll songs and hear the blues guitar riffs, chord progressions and scales being played, just in a less bluesy kinda way. “Johnny B. Good” is a essential example of a blues guitar progression being played with a rock drum beat and a vocal melody that is different from how a standard blues vocal melody should sound.

It’s only been a month since rapper Kayne West rudely grabbed the microphone from country music star Taylor Swift and uttered those infamous four-and-a-half words, “Ima Let You Finish.” Since that moment, “Ima Let You Finish” has taken on a life of its own, having been applied to literally thousands of different scenarios and characters. It appears that country music star Garth Brooks will be coming out of a 9-year retirement, for which he imposed on himself. He announced on Thursday afternoon that he will begin living in Las Vegas to perform at the Wynn Encore Resort. The first show is set for December 11 and will be followed with performances on January 1, 2 & 3. There will be 15 weeks of shows next year, and this will continue for the next 5 years as well. However, Brooks says that he has the option to quit at any time…he just has to complete his announced concerts.

The Country Music Association awards are less than a month away, and today Daughtry was added to the line-up of performers. The Grammy-nominated rock band, led by Season 5 Idol finalist Chris Daughtry , will perform on the CMA Awards show with Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill. They will perform the song Tennessee Line off of Daughtrys sophomore album, Leave This Town . Debuting at No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart in July, Leave This Town became Daughtrys second consecutive album to top the charts.

Ohhh CW. When will you learn. Hopefully never, actually! Because the not-quite-big-boy network just keeps rolling out laughably ridiculous show after laughably ridiculous show. Sometimes they are good ridiculous ( Gossip Girl ) and sometimes they are awful ridiculous ( Melrose Place ). But no matter what, they’re always fun to gawp at in horror. And look! The network has just revealed its new drama development slate , and there are some fantastically stupid-sounding new shows on it.

Oct.15, 2009 in Uncategorized From Library Journal Feiler is a Southerner who grew up distancing himself from “hillbilly” country music. After spending several years abroad, he returned to the South and soon embraced the “new” country music. One hopes that his first book on country music is not his last, for he is a savvy author and journalist who can sort through misconceptions about country music and analyze the historical background with a clarity that other writers sometimes lack.

[Guest post by DRJ] Garth Brooks retired 9 years ago from his country music career but he’s returning for a series of weekend concerts in Las Vegas: “Brooks has three daughters — 17, 15 and 13 — to whom he’s devoted, and he told [Las Vegas hotel-owner Steve] Wynn he wanted to make sure he was home in Oklahoma to be with his children until the last one graduates from high school. So Wynn got Brooks a plane; the singer will work one show Fridays, two shows on Saturdays and one Sundays, and be back home for Monday morning.

It was 1998, about a year after I’d left Lookout Records, and I was completely burnt out on music, or so I thought. In the preceding year I’d barely bought a record or gone to a gig. I only ended up at this particular gig because some friends were playing. I didn’t know anything about the Weakerthans except that the singer had been in Propaghandi, and I might not have paid that much attention to them except that I noticed them setting up a steel guitar. I’ve always had a weakness for country music, you see, at least the old time, classic variety as played by Hank Williams, Sr.

Garth Brooks has announced earlier today that he’s coming out of retirement to do a residency in Las Vegas. He originally announced his retirement in 2000, but has just announced today that he’ll be doing a series of shows at the Wynn Encore Resort. When speaking with head honcho, Steve Wynn, Brooks said, “I told him he couldn’t afford me — I was wrong.” Wynn convinced Brooks to perform at the hotel after purchasing a jet for him to fly back and forth between Las Vegas and his home in Oklahoma.
