Songwriters : Aaron Barker, Arlos Smith and Trent Tomlinson. The popular thematic contrast of “heaven and hell” has long been a way for songwriters to tie together the dichotomy of human life into one nicely alliterative phrase: While “heaven” covers small country churches, family time and blissful courtships, “hell” represents the bars, whiskey, heartbreak and regret that sometimes stem from imbalances in important relationships.

Popular music genre like country music, or country and western music originated in Southern United States. Popularity soared after the Roaring Twenties came to an end. Country music was created from a unique fusion of Celtic, folk, and gospel music. In the beginning country music was referred to as hillbilly music. The phrase country music started in the ’40s because the word hillbilly was deemed to be offensive. The much loved country music of these days was created from a range of many styles of music by many different ethnic groups.

As a group of migrants await a decision from border services to whether or not they will be admitted into Canada this week, I got to thinking about immigration and racism in the country. Growing up in the Toronto area has ensured I’ve seen my fair share of visible minorities (over one-half of Torontonians over the age of 15 are immigrants).  In fact, in certain areas, being a 21-year-old white female makes me the minority.

As ROctober here at the stash rolls on, we look back to an old Blue Monday song that speaks volumes about the alcohol vs cannabis debate. Hey, if marijuana IS safer, then WHY are we driving people to drink? We return to July 2008 for this blues song: Welcome to Blue Monday Wednesday Stashers! Turning to alcohol because there is no safe cannabis available is certainly a subject for the blues. Today, REX P CLEM gives us his take on these kinds of blues with his song, “The Weed is What I Need”.

Bill was from Kentucky, which is the “bluegrass” state (theoretically the grass there is so green it’s blue). Monroe’s music draws from a number of musical traditions: the Scotch-Irish ballad tradition of the Appalachian mountains, the bluesy sound of African American musicians who interacted with Bill, and the roots of country music via the Carter Family. A lot of traditional bluegrass is Carter Family on speed.

Well, I for one can't help but holler and yee-haw. Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins have teamed up on this brilliant new rednecky tune, "Hillbilly Bone." Yes, it's kind of a novelty song. No, it's not deep and dark and bittersweet. But, damn, it is good fun. The two of them are like a match made in sexy-swagger heaven for country music fans. It won't be ready for radio until Nov. 2, but you can hear it now on Blake's official Web site -- in all its baritone glory.

Kings of Leon returned home to Nashville last week to play The Sommet Center. The guys got a warm welcome from Music City, by selling out the venue. Lead singer, Caleb Followill mentioned that the last time they were at The Sommet center was for a church convention. Also during the set, he dedicated Sex is on Fire to their grandmother, who was in the audience and never seen her grandsons play before. He joked that they will probably never play it again. The guys closed with one of my favorite songs, Use Somebody .

The A.V. Club: Rhode Island isn’t known for having much of a country-music scene. What are your thoughts on being from the North and playing music generally associated with the South? John McCauley: That’s not all we do. I don’t know why it’s such a big deal to people—it’s fucking music. Rhode Island is just as American as country music, so anyone who wants to give us a problem about it can stick it up their ass. It’s just music we like.

(REPOST) September 27, 2008 Billboard Staff It wasn’t so long ago that a comprehensive promo plan meant working a record to radio and maybe buying ads in the local alternative paper when a band went on tour. This may sound quaint, or maybe, if your job depends on successfully promoting a band, it sounds blissfully simple. Today the ways artists can promote their music have proliferated so rapidly that it can be hard to keep up with what’s new — what’s actually cutting through the clutter.

I just finished reading a book about the "First Man of Jazz," New Orleans native, Charles "Buddy" Bolden . How interesting to learn of his intricate improvisations and the power in which "The High Note Man" played the cornet. But what I find most interesting about this leading man of jazz is his likeness to one of country music's pioneers, Hank Williams . Though Bolden was born nearly half a century before Williams, the two shared uncanny similarities.

We’re All for the Hall a Huge Success - countrymusictattletale.com

If you do the math, at least $350,000 was brought in at last week’s We’re All for the Hall concert that benefited Country Music Hall of Fame. The Hall says the Sommet Center was filled to capacity with 14,000 people. And, tickets were $25 each. The musicians donated their time and talent. So, except for maybe the cost of electricity and some other overhead, it had to be a good night for the Hall of Fame. Another “We’re All for the Hall” concert is set for next year on Tuesday night, October 5.

GATLINBURG: Bring on the Rain - adayinthesmokies.wordpress.com
10/21/2009
If you’ve been to Gatlinburg or any part of East Tennessee lately, you might be wondering, “Will it ever stop raining?” In 2007, I would venture a guess that the word “drought” was the most commonly used and repeated word in the average Tennessean’s vocabulary.  But, oh, how things have changed. According to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), for the 80 days from August 1 to today, October 20 of 2009, there has been 50 days of measurable rain.  It is enough to make my heart go out to those living in notoriously rainy climates like Seattle.  This much rain really does require an adjustment in your attitude.

Awww, mazel tov!  I had wondered just a few days ago what had happened to country music's resident bad boy, John Rich, since he seemed to have just sort of disappeared. Well now I know what he's been up to, he's been making babies.  The Boot broke the news yesterday that John and his wife, Joan, are expecting a wee bairn.  In true leave-me-the-hell-alone fashion, John wont tell when the baby's due or anything else, but he did say Joan's pregnant so I guess the rest is up to us to wonder about.

I suppose that if sports giants like Michael Jordan and Brett Favre can do it, so can country music superstars. Both of those sports legends left their respective games at the height of their careers, choosing to go out in a proverbial blaze of glory rather than watch their incomparable abilities fade away. And in fact, Jordan chose to pursue another game entirely, with mixed reviews. In the end, though, both men made a much-heralded return to their beloved sports, to the delight of fans and sportscasters alike.
