Review by Amy Blizzard
Throughout her professional career in the music industry, Sunny Sweeney was mainly hidden under the radar of the mainstream scene during the release of her album ‘Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame’. For a few years, she struggled to find a single that would breakthrough in country radio.
But, in 2010, everything changed with the release of ‘From a Table Away’. The emotional ballad that brought a rarely seen dosage of sympathy to the unknowing other woman in an affair caught both the ears and hearts of listeners and became a top ten hit.
Now, Sweeney is preparing to release a self-titled full-length album and giving her rapidly widening fan base a taste of what is to come with the second single ‘Staying’s Worse Than Leaving’. In the new release she wrote alongside Jay Clementi and Radney Foster, Sweeney once again bravely evades the current,
seasonal profusion of overtly lighthearted ditties with a tune that tells the tale of a relationship that has reached the end.
Unlike Tammy Wynette, Sweeney is no longer able to stand by her man and needs to break free. She knows the fragile relationship has gone further than it should have because she convinced herself that staying would be easier in the end. Now, she has received a revelation and is ready to act on it; regardless of the misunderstandings and blame game that will inevitably follow, along with comments from those on the outside looking in.
Sunny Sweeney continues to prove she is more than just another pretty face finding success in the music industry. She has an innate understanding and visceral connection to the raw emotion that was a hallmark in traditional country and she weaves those special gifts into her radio singles seamlessly. In fact, it is easy to have imagined Loretta Lynn or Dolly Parton singing her material decades ago.
Though the subject matter of the song is not overwhelmingly happy there is a silver lining included in the mid-tempo and a sense of optimistic joy embedded in the main character’s new found freedom. Following the lead of ‘From a Table Away‘ there is a repeated combination of old-fashioned elements mixed with modern touches in the arrangement which is highlighted by violin and steel guitar.
Sweeney’s soft, feminine twang is subtle and floats over her solid vocals without being jarring to the ear, garnering further comparisons to singer Natalie Maines. With the release of ‘Staying’s Worse than Leaving’ Sweeney will hopefully once again find success on country radio and make her prior struggles nothing more than a memory.

Sunny Sweeney “Staying’s Worse Than Leaving” Lyrics
Leaving’s hard… trust me, it’s really bad
It’ll shake ya, damn near break ya, it always has
You don’t go until you’re praying to break even
Until staying’s worse than leaving
God knows we tried everything that we could do
You can keep your pride and blame me if you need to
Even though this freedom feels a lot like treason
I know staying’s worse than leaving
It’s gotta get better, it can’t get worse
Hope it’s a blessing not a curse
I don’t care who passes judgment on my reasons
I know staying’s worse than leaving
It’s gotta get better, it can’t get worse
Hope it’s a blessing not a curse
I don’t care who passes judgment on my reasons
I know staying’s worse than leaving
Both our hearts let go a long time ago
Words leave scars and Lord knows they heal slow
Our love died, but somehow we are both still breathing
I just hope someday we’ll look back on this grieving
And say staying’s worse than leaving
Yeah, that staying’s worse than leaving
Yeah, that staying’s worse than leaving
