Review by Matthew Fortuna
Toby Keith has always had a sound that has translated well to fans of all kinds. Like Garth Brooks, he has been able to produce hits with different sounds and styles, and he pulls out a new one for fans with new single “Somewhere Else.” The song is a style fans have never seen from the country veteran, and it is one that they may quickly be clamoring for after hearing this song.
“Somewhere Else” is the third single from the singer’s 2010 album Bullets in the Gun. The album was the fourth straight of Keith’s to reach number one on country charts, and his eighth overall. The single follows on the heels of over 30 straight singles to reach the top 20, and looks to quickly achieve the same feat.
After the Western narrative “Bullets in the Gun” and the country rocker “Trailerhood,” the new single is playful, mid-tempo tune that is more folk or rockabilly than country. The song is song without the characteristic gruffness that Keith has become known for, and his smooth voice glides seamlessly over the foot-tapping instrumental.
“Somewhere Else” is a good natured look at an average day, and about getting lost in routine and the daily minutiae. It’s about knowing where you’re going, and getting out of the rut of watching the Cubs losing on TV again. It’s a love song and a light blue song. It’s both an upbeat diddy and guitar-strumming jive.
Toby Keith’s smooth vocals prove what many loyal fans have known for a long time, that the performer has always been a strong vocalist. A real storyteller’s song, the verses move along at a brisk take, and the singer is able to cover more ground than many singers can cover over three or four songs.
Adapting in a way he never has before, the song shows off the versatility and skill that have made Toby Keith one of the preeminent sellers and performers of his generation in country music.

Toby Keith “Somewhere Else” Lyrics
I walk downtown in my broke down shoes
To the side street pub with the bar band blues
Take a backseat at the front door table
Order me a Bud and a shot of Black Label
Closed this place down once again
Sitting here wishing you’d walk right in
Down my shot, shoot my beer
I ain’t gotta go home but I can’t stay here
It’s a short, short walk down to my second home
But that boulevard gets longer when you’re walking back alone
And I don’t know where you might be
Wherever it is, it will be without me
I keep thinking I’ll come home
One day and find you
Long as I got that neon light
Shining like a beacon in the night
I know I can make it downtown by myself
‘Cause if you don’t know where you’re going
You might end up somewhere else
Kicking off my shoes, tumbling through the front door
Knowing too well the kind of night I’m in for
Cubs got beat again on Sports Center
My bedroom’s cold as my TV dinner
One more cigarette and I’ll kill the light
And only be wishing you were sleeping at my side
And I don’t know where you might be
Wherever it is, it will be without me
I keep thinking I’ll come home
One day and find you
Long as I got that front porch light
Shining like a beacon in the night
I know I can make it home all by myself
‘Cause if you don’t know where you’re going
You might end up somewhere else
Girl, I don’t know where you might be
Wherever it is, it will be without me
Keep thinking I’ll come home
One day and find you
Long as I got that front porch light
Shining like a beacon in the night
I know I can make it home all by myself
‘Cause if you don’t know where you’re going
You might end up somewhere else
Ah, somewhere else
You might end up somewhere else
Somewhere else
Hey
