Billy Currington "People Are Crazy"
Review by Matthew Fortuna

It’s hard to make a lyric – especially a chorus – that is at the same time a half-hearted throwaway and a songwriting gem, but Billy Currington and his collaborators pulled it off. With “People Are Crazy,” the second single from his Third Album, Currington achieved that kind of T-shirt slogan lyricism.
The follow-up to “Don’t” on his October 2008 release Little Bit of Everything, “People Are Crazy is an introspective, mid-tempo song featuring the hook: “God is great / beer is good / and people are crazy.” Not an obvious choice for a single, but an album track as solid as most have to offer.

Billy Currington
Showing the characteristic mellow side of Currington, the song is but part of the package that propelled Little Bit of Everything to number two on U.S. country charts. With an easy-acoustic guitar and melodic steel guitar, “People Are Crazy” reads like an old story to an old friend.
The idea – the chance meeting and gained wisdom from a wise old stranger – is not an original one; it’s been done most notably and most recently by Brad Paisley with “Waiting On a Woman.” But the genuineness with which Currington delivers the story makes the song unique. The impact the lesson has had on the protagonist, and vice versa, is evident in the story telling.
The 35-year old Currington, much more apt at the upbeat and fun-loving – the love song or drunken song – sounds like the seasoned bard with this impressive vocal performance. Adding a degree of ease and experience to his singing, Currington does not miss a line. He adds some of the personability of Brad Paisley to his vocal, as well as an homage to the spoken country of Jimmie Rodgers’ era.
In the last verse, there may be no post-mortem gesture more country then leaving beer by someone’s headstone. And thus is the charm of People Are Crazy: “I dropped by today / To just say thanks and pray / And I left a six-pack right there on his grave.” And Currington meshes with Troy Jones and Bobby Braddock’s lyrics to reflect this charm with confidence.

More Reviews of "People Are Crazy"
There’s nothing that even signifies “People Are Crazy” as a country song other than said stock characters and the obligatory references to beer and God. There’s an occasionally audible steel guitar lick, but the overall sound is that of soft rock. -- The 9513
In some instances Currington’s mid-tempo ballad seems to tackle some material that seems a little to strong to conform to the smooth approach he makes to the song, but overall the message is clear and nicely presented. - Country Central
The bass line is traditional country two step while the steel guitar is always audible and Currington's vocals are spot on. While he's able to sing virtually any kind of music, his flexible baritone sounds perfect when paired with a song like "People Are Crazy." - Roughstock

"People Are Crazy" Lyrics
This old man and me were at the bar and we
Were having us some beers and swaping I dont cares
Talking politics blonde and red-head chicks
Old dogs and new tricks and habits we aint kicked
We talked about Gods grace and all the hell we raised
Then I heard the old man say;
God is great beer is good and People Are Crazy
He said "I fought two wars
Been married and divorced"
What brings you to Ohio?
He said "Damned if I know"
We talked an hour or two about every girl we knew
What all we put them through
Like two old boys will do
We pondered life an death
He light a cigarette
He said "These damn things will kill me yet;
But God is great beer is good and people are crazy"
Last call its 2am I said goodbye to him
I never talk to him again
Then one sunny day I saw the old mans face
Front page Obituary he was a millionaree
he left his fortune to some guy he barely knew his kids were mad as hell
But me Im doing well
And I drop by today to just say thanks and pray I left a six-pack right there on his grave and i said; God is great
beer is good and people are crazy.
God is great beer is good and people are crazy.
God is great beer is good and people are crazy
