Bucky Covington has come a long way since season five of American Idol. From being judged up and down by Simon Cowell, to releasing a number one country album in 2007 with his self-titled debut. Now, Convington has reached a new level of country stardom: covering a number one rock hit.
Bucky’s “Gotta Be Somebody” is the latest single off of his upcoming 2010 album, and is a cover of Nickelback’s 2009 song off of their “Dark Horse” album. Penned by lead singer Chad Kroeger, who bears a resemblance to Bucky’s long white locks, the song propelled Nickelback to number one on the charts, and Covington hopes to reach the same success with his country version.
He has already reached number 32 on the chart with his first single, “I Want My Life Back,” and the 31-year old North Carolina native hopes to score with “Gotta Be Somebody.”
The song is a true cover of the song, with a slight country bent. The song retains its rock style and the lyrics are delivered with the same punch and impact, but Bucky’s softer and more crafted vocal delivers a more introspective look at the song that longs for companionship and “the real thing.”
The song is void of the heavy rock and roll guitar of Nickelback’s version, but a Bucky’s has “country hit” written all over it, and the double-tracked choruse from Covington’s husk voice evokes emotion and range over Kroeger’s powerful lyrics.
While the protagonist of the song is “holding my breath,” Covington may not have to do the same as the song climbs the chart. He’s has weather the test of Simon Cowell, and has proven to be a wanted commodity, and country fans will likely jump at “Gotta Be Somebody” and Bucky the same way they did at Nickelback and the original.

I second the great review comment from Jonie! I love this song and Bucky’s version is excellent! If you have not met Bucky or have seen him perform live at a concert, you really need to. There is nothing “superstarish” about him, he loves what he does and will go out of his way to meet his fans, take pictures, and actually talk to you. Bucky does not hide from his fans. If by chance you do catch him on the run and he doesn not stop, it is because he really has to be where he is going!

I agree with everything you said. I love this song and Bucky’s voice is so clear when he sings it. It’s a perfect fit for him.
Hi, I like country music and rock music alike. I’m not picky. However you can’t take a powerful rock balad done by Nickleback who has power and emotion in everything they sing and try to do it with a country artist that doesn’t have the same power and emotion. He did sing the song right at least he didn’t try to change it but I still felt like I was still in the Karaoke bar wishing I was home when I heard it. He does not have the voice for this song.
