Craig Morgan "This Ain't Nothin'"
Review By Matthew Fortuna
Craig Morgan is nearing the status of modern country legend. Surely one of the greats of the 2000s, and continuing his brand into the 2010s, Morgan has been bringing the kind of Grand Ole’ Opry-approved hits that country fans live for since 2000. The singer’s latest single, “This Ain’t Nothin’”, follows in the long line of diverse and capable singles in a decade of success for the 45-year-old.
The song is the fourth single from Craig Morgan’s fifth album in ten years. Titled “That’s Why,” the album has mixed the kind of introspection with country good times that Morgan has become known for. While obviously having a blast with his latest single “Bonfire,” which reached fourth on the charts, Morgan
brings a level of seriousness and country life to his new single “This Ain’t Nothin’.”
The album, which reached number 8 on country charts, features Morgan’s must mature, most fun-loving and most skilled set to date. The fourth single features a melancholy look at living the hard life. Morgan laments a no-win situation of an old-man who has lived and lost – with an emphasis on the lost. The old man faces further problems in life, but knows that he can topple them, proudly and confidently proclaiming, “This Ain’t Nothing.”
Featuring the common country theme of the wizened elder with life-living advice for a younger man, “This Ain’t Nothin’” strikes the same chord as Billy Currington’s “People Are Crazy,” and Brad Paisley’s “Waiting on a Woman.” It evokes the same emotion and delivers a deeply sentimental lyric by skilled songwriters Kerry Kurt Phillips and Chris DuBois.
Musically the song features a melodic violin with a strong harmony from guitars and a piano, all underlying the prominence of Morgan’s powerful and heartfelt vocal that has endeared him to fans for a decade. It is a vocal that is likely to transform musical events like “This Ain’t Nothin’,” into powerful pieces of country poetry long into the future.
