Dierks Bentley "Sideways"
Review by Diana Rowe

Phoenix native Dierks Bentley released his second single from his #1 album, Feel that Fire. The title is “Sideways" (Songwriters: Jim Beavers & Dierks Bentley) – and it lives up to its name.
"Sideways" lyrics and music are more a square peg in your round hole, typical Dierks country songs. It’s one of those fun-loving, upbeat party tunes that just shout out “bring your friends together to jam and kick back.” "Sideways" is a mix of bluegrass and hillbilly, with lots of guitar and banjo strumming, perhaps a nod to his musical influence of Ricky Skaggs. Some might even think "Sideways" is a bit over-the-top with its somewhat cheesy lyrics – and many critics have already slammed it for just that reason.
For those that prefer the soulful, ballad and more top 40 country side of Dierks, you’ll probably be disappointed in Sideways. The background vocals are more group-chanting rhymes like “And it’s HEY now, here we go/Dee-JAY don’t you play nothing slow” or less than brilliant pick-up lines “Hey girl, what’s your name? It’s so loud in here I can’t hear a thing, but I sure do like your style.”
But the production is spot on for a party song, and the radio fans will call in and request it to get their party going. The words are made to sing-a-long: simple and easy to remember – another point scored for a party song.
For those country fans who love to get out there and boot scoot, Sideways definitely puts out the beats made for line dancing, quick two-stepping, or swinging. I’m sure it’ll be a top 10 hit, because…well, because Dierks is the performer. And who doesn’t love this Mr. Country Hottie's style, even if it's loud in here? Go ahead, put on your dancing boots and pick yourself up this party song, Sideways.

Here's some Reviews for "Sideways"
Like canned laughter on a sitcom, the ambient bar noises and group-chanted words in the chorus (“And it’s HEY now, here we go/Dee-JAY don’t you play nothing slow”) aim to make you feel like part of the party. - The 9513
... just didn’t work, perhaps because once your thoughts run deep, it’s no longer fun to wade in the shallow waters of your mind. - Country Music Universe
