The standout track from the standout newcomers of the country music landscape in 2008, the Eli Young Band’s “Guinevere” is the kind of country song that makes up the soundtrack of movies, or concerts, or life.
Though the song hasn’t made any movie credits yet, “Guinevere” stood as the shining star of the Saturday lineup at Detroit’s 2009 Downtown Hoedown. The third single from the North Texas band’s third studio album, “Guinevere” is likely to follow in the charting steps of “Always the Love Songs” and “When It Rains.” The two singles propelled the band from the country underground to the mainstream with their 2008 album Jet Black & Jealous
Behind the smooth vocals of lead singer Mike Eli and the virtuoso guitar of James Young, the band infuses a North Texas pop into a country scene that has seen far two few true bands lately.

With the truly memorable opening lyric of 2008, “Guinevere” laments the sorrow and searching of its disillusioned protagonist, and emits a soulfulness rarely matched in country lately. The lyrics overlie a heavy hearted lead guitar and bass played with ease and style. Opens Eli on the song: “She’s got a bumper like a billboard/ Covered in stickers of her favorite band / She’s got a hand full of records that she turns to when she needs to land/ She’s a Saturday night parade through the streets/ That all eyes come to see, including me.”
The band, who has been recording together since 2005, has opened for the likes of Miranda Lambert and Jack Ingram, and is pushing to catapult their easy country pop into a style that can snatch the ears of the mainstream market. Their acoustic ability and their simple styles and heartfelt sounds endear them to followers around the country.
They’ve captured the imaginations of the underground, and their ability to write a love song is surpassed only by their ability to spin a true campfire country song, and the market for that kind of talent is never full. If it’s always the love songs, though, you can’t go wrong with “Guinevere.”
