Hank Williams Jr "Red White and Pink-Slip Blues"

Review by Amy Blizzard

request Hank Williams Jr "Red White and Pink Slip Blues"In these trying economic times, Hank 'Bocephus' Williams, Jr. debuts his new single 'Red, White and Pink-Slip Blues' from the upcoming album of the same name. The song title alone and the constant affiliation with anti-tax parties that were widely spread across the country on April 15th might make it easy to assume that the single, from an open John McCain supporter, is nothing more than an attack against the Obama administration.

But upon closer inspection, the true essence of the song written by Mark Stephen Jones and Bud Tower is about something much bigger than political opinions and brings to life the fear that is an axiom for the working American public, both democrat and republican, during the days of a recession. The fittingly somber and gritty tune relays the story of a patriotic, hardworking man who 'loved this town and this neighborhood' and was a 'forman on the line, three to eleven. But eighteen months, two days ago, the mill closed down and moved to Mexico.'
The raw and emotional chorus echoes the words that have been on the lips of many unemployed workers. 'I paid my bills, I paid my dues. I paid my share of taxes, too. Now, I can't afford to buy my baby shoes. I've got the red, white and pink-slip blues.'
As his financial burdens grow deeper, the man finds himself in places he never expected to be, hiding his truck in a friend's garage because there's 'repo to dodge.' And slipping out the back door to make sure no one is onto his plan, because 'we're gonna' need that truck when they come to take the house away.'

The final verse is layered with frustration and possesses a truthful uncertainty, with the protagonist not knowing how his story is going to end. 'You know, I love my country, and I'm not one to complain. But there's a lot of us who feel like we've been left out here, out in the rain.'

The simple and well-emoted song may ruffle a few feathers. But it will likely be a hit with longtime fans of Hank Williams Jr. and strike a chord with radio listeners, struggling through hard times, who might find a bit of solace in the heartfelt lyrics.
On a brighter not, new and old fans of Hank Williams Junior have not only the new single to enjoy, but a chance to enter the 'Bocephus Bailout' contest featured at www.bocephusbailout.com.
