Jamey Johnson "My Way To You"

Review by Matthew Fortuna

Jamey Johnson has monopolized the gritty and melancholy – the soulful and heartfelt – in country music and his new single is another notch on his songwriting post. “My Way To You” may echo the same drawling country story as “In Color,” but the song moves from the war and memories to intense love and longing.

Johnson, a Birmingham, Alabama, native looks like he sings, sings like he lives and lives the way most of us yearn to and want to – with memories, desire and emotions. Johnson’s music has hit the nerve so close to so many fans because the sentiments of that real life can be found in his music, and he has served himself with a couple Grammy Awards to boot.

“My Way to You” is the first single off of Jamey Johnson’s upcoming fourth studio album. The song

and album follow on the heels of the wildly successful That Lonesome Song and “High Cost of Living,” and sound as though the songwriter may still be riding that same virtuoso writing and singing crest.

Penning most of his own songs, Johnson’s music sounds like it is “living the high times, hard times and times he couldn’t tell,” that he describes in “My Way to You.” Whether his music is describing the good life or a bad life, it usually follows a life that is “living fast as hell.”

Not burning the bridges he describes in this love song, Johnson uses this song as a longing toward a broken love. He strives to regain that love. Going down the wrong roads, he may have lost his way in life that may have led him back to love, but his music is connecting bridges from his successful third album to his past work since 2002, and his successful relationships writing for and with the like of James Otto and Trace Adkins.

Whether Johnson finds his way to the lost love described in “My Way to You,” he has found his way to the ears and hearts of many country fans, and his voice and look have emerged as a latter-day Johnny Cash. In a genre peppered occasionally by fluff, Jamey Johnson has emerged to add some substance and emotion – and fans can feel it.

"My Way To You" Lyrics

Written By: Jamey Johnson, Charlie Midnight

Setting fires and dark desires, the nights that I just can’t recall
I woke up flyin’ with the angels, but no one to catch me when I fall
Goin’ down the wrong road again, living by the wrong code and
Chasing after dreams that don’t come true
Looking for the right signs and riding on the white lines
Just trying to find my way to you

There’s been high times and there’s been hard times
And there’s been times I couldn’t tell
If I’m livin’ a good life or living a bad life
‘cause I’m always livin’ fast as hell
I’m going down the wrong road, living by the wrong code and
Chasing after dreams that don’t come true
Looking for the right signs and ridin’ on the white lines
Just trying to find my way to you

From an Alabama chorus to dirty barroom floor
Burning bridges down I’d never even crossed
When I didn’t have a care to when I didn’t have a prayer
I never once thought I was lost, somehow I knew
I found my way to you
Going down the wrong road, living by the wrong code
Chasing after dreams that don’t come true
Looking for the right sings and riding on the white lines
Just trying to find my way to you
Trying to find my way to you
