Lady Antebellum "American Honey"

Review by Amy Blizzard

It seems hard to believe that with only four previous radio singles to their credit Lady Antebellum have creative a monumental stream of success that would leave even some of Nashville's greatest legends wincing in envy. In 2009, Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood blossomed in the realm of award shows when they ended the dominated, six-year reign of fellow trio Rascal Flatts when they won the Country Music Association Award for Vocal Group of the Year and also took home the trophy for 'Single of the Year' for their hit song 'I Run to You'. On the radio charts they were also once again victorious when they received the second number one single of their career for 'Need You Now'.

In theory, it may appear grossly unlikely for any act to remain on such a fruitful path into 2010, but Lady Antebellum are clearly beating the odds as they enter the new year and decade as Grammy nominees who are preparing to release their much anticipated sophomore album 'Need You Now', which is currently set to hit stores on January 26th, and submit another new track to radio.

In 'American Honey', the second single from 'Need You Now', the group members slightly drift away from their well-established niche of country-pop and include a bit more rustic twang. A laid back mid-tempo, 'American Honey' begins with a focus on the childhood memories of a young girl who grew up in a small town in the countryside who possessed a steady wisdom and beautiful spirit. And, then, also reflects the regret of letting that youthful innocence and hometown pride slip away in the age of adulthood and chaotic realities of the modern age.

Hillary Scott once again takes center stage and produces a lead vocal that is refreshing, dulcet and an immense delight that is enhanced with charming backgrounds from her band mates. Much like the alluring, sentimental singles that garnered Deana Carter passive popularity in the late 1990's and the little known Meredith Edwards gem 'A Rose Is a Rose', 'American Honey' oozes with a sincere and genuine palpability that will surely please the masses of Lady Antebellum's devoted fans along with more traditional radio listeners and ensure that 2010 will be another memorable year.

"American Honey" Lyrics

She grew up on the side of the road
Where the church bells ring
And strong love grows
She grew up good
She grew up slow
Like American honey

Steady as a preacher
Free as a weed
Couldn't wait to get going
But wasn't quite ready to leave
So innocent, pure and sweet
American honey

There's a wild, wild whisper
Blowin' in the wind
Callin' out my name
Like a long lost friend
Oh, I miss those days
As the years go by
Oh, nothin' sweeter than summertime
And American honey

Get caught in the race of this crazy life
Tryin' to be everything
Can make you lose your mind
I just wanna go back in time
To American honey

There's a wild, wild whisper
Blowin' in the wind
Callin' out my name
Like a long lost friend
Oh, I miss those days
As the years go by
Oh, nothin' sweeter than summertime
And American honey

Gone for so long now
I gotta get back to her somehow
To American honey

There's a wild wild whisper
Blowin' in the wind
Callin' out my name
Like a long lost friend
Oh, I miss those days
As the years go by
Nothin' sweeter than summertime
And American honey
And American honey
