Miranda Lambert "Dead Flowers"
Review by Amy Blizzard

He’s come a long way since the mid-90’s hit “Hold My Hand”, but ML-dead-flowersIn the lead off single from her upcoming third album, which is tentatively set to hit stores in September, Miranda Lambert shows a new side with 'Dead Flowers'. Most well-known for being a contestant on the first season of the reality show Nashville Star and a sassy girl who sings rambunctious, fast-paced tunes with a vendetta against ex-boyfriends, Lambert now croons about fading love in a softer and more artistic light. 'Dead Flowers' fittingly chronicles the transitions and roller-coaster ride of emotions that come with a dying romance. Throughout the first two verses a heartbroken woman is staring at a bouquet that her love 'just brought home one day', realizing she feels like the dead flowers 'sitting in a vase' filled with gray water and a string of abandoned lights that lit 'our whole house on Christmas Day' that have now 'burned out, but they still hang'. The chorus is powerful and showcases the heartache of still loving someone who is blind to see your pain in a relationship that has turned stagnant. 'He ain't feelin' anything. My love, my hurt or the sting of this rain. And I'm living in a hurricane. All he can say is 'man, ain't it a such nice day.'

Miranda Lambert's New Song
In the final verse, Miranda Lambert finds herself at a crossroads, blatantly aware of a love that is no longer growing but afraid to leave in search of something new. 'I feel like the tires on this car, you said they won't go far, but we're still rolling. I look in the rear view mirror and I see dead flowers in the yard; and that string of lights and it ain't glowing.' 'Dead Flowers' is loaded with metaphors that help make it relatable and tender without being poetically trite and a steady drumbeat in the background that supplies a bit of edge and contrasts nicely with the solemn lyrics and adds to the emotions of two people who are in two very different places. Miranda Lambert acts as both a singer and storyteller and provides a stirring, powerful performance that proves her budding career is now in full bloom.
