Toby Keith "Lost You Anyway"

Review By Matt Fortunarequest Toby Keith "Lost You Anyway"

Toby Keith in his career has mastered the unspectacular. He has perfected the “good-not-great” to a near art form, and fans have taken notice. But with his new single, “Lost You Anyway,” Keith has traded his normally rugged and raunchy self for a sweeter and more sensitive Toby, and he may have missed the mark with this one.

A heartbroken Keith laments a lost love on his latest single from his 12th studio album, That Don't Make Me A Bad Guy Toby Keith "Lost You Anyway" (his sixth number one country album). Though the singing reflects the same grizzled country man as past slow songs, it doesn’t feel right here. The lyrics drown in cliché (“Giving you the stars above,” “Let the world revolve around you”), and the vocal range is not quite Keith Urban.

The song attempts to redeem itself with a powerful instrumental, but falls short. The underdog attitude that has adorned fans to his “How Do You Like Me Now?!” persona is retraced here. But these songs are better left to John RichKeith has had past successes with slower number – love songs and loss songs – and die hard fans will find merit here, but it is hard to say whether country radio will.

Keith’s tackling of clichés on “God Love Her” was well met with a sense of style that precedes Toby Keith’s name, but it appears to be lacking with his second single. A song that very well may be propelled to the Top 10, like 35 of his past singles, “Lost You Anyway” continues in the spirit of the album title, That Don’t Make Me the Bad Guy. The 47-year old Keith has always maintained a youthful fervor, and fans can celebrate his courage to always venture new roads musically. For now, perhaps we’ll just wait for him to return to getting drunk and being somebody.

"Lost You Anyway" Lyrics

Maybe you were right, Maybe I could have changed
Sittin' here alone tonight thinkin' 'bout a lot of things
What's a man to say when all the questions start
Hell I know deep down inside my broken heart

Could've tried just a little bit harder
Kissed you just a little bit sweeter
Held on just a little bit longer
Dug down just a little bit deeper
Let the world revolve around you
And give you the stars above
Loved you just enough to make you stay
And I'd lost you anyway

I hate it when it's like this, baby it's like that now
Nothing I can say to you, you even care to talk about
How you gonna dress it up, wrap it in a pretty bow
When it's gone, it's gone for good, baby at least I know

Could've tried just a little bit harder
Kissed you just a little bit sweeter
Held on just a little bit longer
Dug down just a little bit deeper
Let the world revolve around you
And give you the stars above
Loved you just enough to make you stay
And I'd lost you anyway

Let the world revolve around you
And given you the stars above
Loved you just enough to make you stay
And I'd lost you anyway

  1. Dixie Streams, huh? Explains a lot. Doesn’t Georgia have the lowest level of high school students that graduate? Seems like you need to go back to school cause you really missed the mark in summarizing Toby Keith’s musical career.

I feel sorry for you that you can’t feel the emotion in the new single. It’s about the whole of the song, not if a line or two are cliche.

And apparently the new dig on Toby is to attack his “lack of range”. Never heard that before, now it’s popping up in all sorts of reviews. No Range? Come on! The dude’s voice is THE BEST voice out there. I don’t care what genre you are talking about.

Opinions should not be considered critiques. Aren’t there some sort of standards for critiques?

  2. Wow, a review of a review! I think this is a GaJukebox First. I can appreciate the fact that you disagree with the review, but must you hurl such vicious insults? Your IP tells me you’re from Kentucky…. I thought people in Kentucky new better than that kind of stuff. So rude!

BTW, I agree for the most part with Matthew, “Lost You Anyway” not his best song, and compared with the previous 2 on the album, this falls flat. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it will be a hit. Just not his best song….. Looks like the guy that sings it agrees, because it was the third release from the CD… I like Toby Keith and everything, but I’m not sure i’d say he has the best voice of ANY genre.

  3. I’m only in Kentucky for business – I need to travel here frequently – hanging in a hotel internet room on a Sunday trawling the internet for “choice” pieces like this. Kentuckians probably DO know better than to sling insults about education levels.

The “critic” started off a piece with “Toby Keith in his career has mastered the unspectacular” which I thought set a rather “vicious attack” tone. OK, the critic doesn’t like the song. It’s still comes across as an opinion piece, not a review. (Yes I see the irony there. That’s MY opinion of his review! lol!)

As for Toby thinking maybe the song isn’t as strong as the first two releases, have you heard the “Bad Guy” CD? Each song on that thing is “single ready”; not an album filler piece in the bunch. So the fact that it was released third could be due only to the fact that he can’t release all of them at the same time. I’m still hoping for another release form the CD. Kenny & Keith Urban seem to like to release a lot of songs off onf one CD. Why not TOby too. This CD has the strength to produce more singles.

Thanks for the entertainment and exchange. Gotta let the next guy have a turn on the computer. Maybe I’ll be back later if there isn’t a good movie on tv.

  4. You’ve managed to insult 2 states (both southern, I sense some resentment here). If you’re so much better than this website, why do you keep coming back?

I’m not sure I caught the website where you post your brilliant reviews?
