Approaching 50 years old, Trace Adkins is adding notches to a belt sure to already land him in the country hall of fame. The singer’s latest single, “This Ain’t No Love Song,” is exactly what it says it is not. Perhaps because it is done so well can Adkins make the claim, but fans may not mind after hearing the well-crafted look at a love song that is not often heard from the grizzled veteran Adkins.
Among the movers in the genre since 1996, the Louisiana native has seen each of his eight previous albums reach the top 10, and looks to push his ninth into that realm with his upcoming “Cowboy’s Back in Town,” to be released in August.

With the first single from the album, “This Ain’t No Love Song” is a departure from the typical Adkins single, and finds a nice middle ground between the two extremes the singer usually relishes in. Not the hillbilly-country rocker, or the soft ballad of loss or love, “This Ain’t No Love Song,” has Adkins at his most personable and most open.
The tough guy not willing to admit to doing a long song, the song plods along nicely with obvious infatuation – just “singing a tune, singing about you.” The song has Adkins showing off his typically methodical voice with a bit more energy, and deep vocal chords caress over a country guitar for three verses, finding their way perfectly into the melody.
The song might not be heard by the person it is about, but Adkins sure is getting his feelings out, and singing and feeling good. Exactly the response he can expect to get from fans as well, “Love Song” is catchy and exuberant, filled with energy and touches the kind of radio-jam reached by a Toby Keith, Joe Nichols or James Otto. Part of the old country vanguard, Adkins surely has a number of hits still in his arsenal.
